A Guide To The Different Types Of Roofing Underlayment

Your roof is what keeps your family warm and dry through the different seasons. But, do you know the anatomy of your roof? Without a properly installed underlayment, you may find yourself dealing with leaks and water damage. Roofing underlayment is a thing, waterproof or water-resistant layer that is installed directly onto the wood surface of your roof. It sits between the roofing deck and the shingles.

Asphalt-saturated felt underlayment used to be the most popular type of underlayment until it was replaced by the use of synthetic options. These underlayments are made up of a combination of cellulose, polyester, and asphalt. The base mat of felt underlayment is saturated with asphalt, making it water-resistant. It’s a flexible layer that’s then topped with felt paper.

Nowadays, non-bitumen synthetic underlayment is much more popular among contractors. While the base mat is also saturated in asphalt, fiberglass is added to provide even more resistance. Depending on the recommendation of the contractor, waterproof products may also be added.

The most expensive underlayment option is rubberized asphalt. The higher price tag is due to the increased amount of asphalt and rubber polymers added. These added materials make rubberized asphalt completely waterproof and highly desirable.
